History
The first idea for the first fire company in Medford Farms was brough up by Mary P. Brown of Tabernacle. Alex Morrison had a tydol has a gas station on the point where rt 206 and tabernacle road join. Mrs. Brown with a daughter and a state child, Chester Hess, lived in the brick house just a few lots south of Morrisons. Mrs. Brown asked Alex what he thought of a fire comapany. He mentioned to Peason "Pete" Law and he stopped by Jim Summers house to see if he would go along with it. HE believed it was around the Last of January or Febuary 1941.
The first meeting of the fire company was not really an offical meeting, it was just a get together at Mary Browns house with Walter Mcclain of Medford who was very helpful. Mr. Roode was chairman and a young man whos last name was Riel took down the proceedings. The next meeting was much better attened. They elected Dirk Roode President, Jim Summers Vice President, Alex Morrison Treasure, Pearson "Pete" Law Secretary, and David Reed Chief. IN the next week or so a Mount Holly Lawyer Bayard Allen , Drew up the papers and took care of filing them. At the following meeting MR. McClain brought Ernine Day and made it possible for the company to purchase a 1926 Reo Sped wagon with a 35 gallon soda acid tank. That had been taken from Deleware Gardens in trade for $125.00 also he sold us six indian tanks for some low figure. In all the Fire company owed them near $200. They made regular payments so that when the truck was delievered the fire company had no credit problems.
The new truck was delievered in April and once it arrived in tabernacle there was no place to store the truck so it was stored in Jim Summers garage. The truck was kept in Jims garage for about two months until it was moved to a building on RT 206. The truck stayed staioned at this location until it the new Fire house was built on Hawkins Road.
