Crews Respond to Warren Grove Fire

April 15th, 2007At approximately 15:30 hrs Engine 431 (Medford Farms Vol. Fire Company was dispatched to Ocean County Warren Grove Fire Station No. 48 for Wild land Urban Interface assignment. Engine 4311 was en route minutes after the call with a crew of five. While en route crew observed a large column of smoke in the distance and in the general direction in which they where heading. Upon arrival at Warren Grove, Engine 4311 was teamed up with other units from Ocean and Burlington County and directed to respond to the Brighton at Barnegat Mobile Home Park. Upon arrival at the Park Engine 4311 was directed to provide protection to the first two homes in the park. After turning themselves around and positing themselves with an escape route; the crew then pulled 100ft of 1 ¾” down a driveway between the two homes and took a position on the driveway. As the crew continued to stand fast they observed the head fire approaching threw the woods at a rapid rate. As the fire approached the crew began a last minute check of all it equipment and positioned. The fire was upon the crew with in minutes of seeing it approaching the trees and bushes ignited with flames 60ft high rolling above the crews head. As the fire began to put intense heat and smoke upon the crew they began to cool the homes with well placed streams of water. About 3 minutes after the fire had arrived it was out. After the fire had cleared the crew did a 360 of both homes and hit all the hotspots that where burning near the homes. Once it was determined both homes were safe and all the spot fires had been extinguished the crew gathered up and began to rehab themselves. As the crew was rehabbing it was observed several homes had succumb to the fire despite the efforts of the other crews. Engine 4311’s officer preceded approximately 3 homes up to see if those crews needed assistance with fighting the fire in the trailer. After determining the need for assistance Engine 4311’s crew split sending firefighters to assist with fire suppression efforts and the other to observe their existing homes. Engine 4311’s crew worked with several other crews to successfully extinguish the fire inside the home. The home however to suffered severe smoke and fire damage. As crews from that fire were rehabbing themselves once again smoke was observed coming from yet another home. Crews then rushed to that home and forced entry and began to check for the fire location. The fire was located to be under the home and was quickly extinguished. Engine 4311 was then directed by command to report to the rehab area at Pinewood Fire Station. As crews packed up equipment and began to remount the truck another fire was once again observed this time coming from the community’s recreational center. Engine 4311 proceeded down the street to the center to find the bushes and the exterior of the building on fire. The crew once again pulled a 1 ¾ line and quickly extinguished the fire. The other crews from Ocean and Burlington County arrived right behind and help to extinguish the fire and check for extension. There was no extension into the building and crews packed up the equipment and returned to Pine Wood Fire Company. The Crews from Station 431(Medford Farms) 421 (New Gretna) 452 (Lower Bank) and Lacey Twp. worked together side by side throughout the incident and all crews did a great job. The Crews from all the companies spent the rest of the night running as a WUI taskforce and were in staging until being released at approximately 22:30 hrs.
